The Benefits of Living in a College Town

What does it mean to live in a college town? For many, living in Millersville offers a vibrant community, unique educational opportunities, and a diverse social culture. While some may think that the benefits of living in a college town are exclusive to university students, there are a myriad of benefits for Millersville residents, even those who aren’t earning a degree!

McNairy Library –

In a world where access to books, games, and television are increasingly monetized, take advantage of your access to the University’s own McNairy Library! A library card may be issued to individuals at least 18 years of age with valid picture identification at the Library Main Circulation Desk. As a Millersville Borough resident, the annual fee is waived for a library card, meaning you can use library resources for free! You will have access to books in the general collection, juvenile and curriculum materials, DVDs and video materials, and electronic resources for in-library use. McNairy Library also has its own Starbucks café, which carries most popular Starbucks drinks. The café accepts credit cards, cash, and university meal plan payment options (no gift cards). Go grab a latte and crack open a book at McNairy Library!

Sports Events Calendar –

From football to soccer, tennis to volleyball, Millersville University offers a myriad of sports teams available for university students. Most matches and games are open to the public, so don’t wait for the Homecoming football game, you can go support MU and cheer on our teams year-round! Check out the sports calendar with events open to the public at https://millersvilleathletics.com/calendar.

Art/Education Opportunities at the Ware Center –

The Ware Center for the Arts, in conjunction with Millersville University, brings a diverse array of visual arts exhibitions, cross-cultural live performances, films, and educational programs to Lancaster County. Though it is located at 42 North Prince Street in downtown Lancaster, the Ware Center’s mission is closely tied to MU’s: to foster creativity, learning, and understanding in the community. Attend a Ware Center event and make it a date downtown! For more information about upcoming events go to https://artsmu.com.

MU Performing Arts –

Millersville University’s Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center hosts cultural and artistic events year round featuring MU students and other professional performances with the Tell School of Music. Millersville residents can choose from a variety of events, such as a holiday celebration like the Glorious Sounds of the Season, a jazzy evening out with the MU Jazz Ensemble, a day-long festival with the Commercial Band ensembles at Phantom Power, or the MU Musicals in spring and fall organized by the MU Theatre Department. Support the arts at MU! For more information about MU Performing Arts events, visit https://www.millersville.edu/music/index-events.php. For ticketed events, visit https://www.etix.com/ticket/v/23659/.

MU Lifelong Learning Program –

Are you interested in continuing your education or just looking to learn something new? Millersville University offers opportunities for lifelong learning for teachers, social workers, nurses, and any adults looking for a chance to grow their knowledge in any subject where courses are provided by the university. Senior citizens can audit online or in-person classes when they submit a Part Time Non-Degree application. This process means that they will not have to fulfill common requirements such as taking examinations and writing papers, so that they can just focus on learning what they like! If you’re over the age of 62, you can even apply to have the tuition fee waived for one course per semester when you register for classes at MU. If you’re looking to continue your education in social work, further your professional development in nursing, or receive Act 48 Credit as an educator, MU has your back!
